There are many caves and rock shelters to explore, these shelters contain the largest and most concentrated group of paintings in Africa south of the Sahara. These were made by the San people over a period of 4,000 years.

Head to Lammergeyer Hide for the opportunity to see the rare bearded vulture, cape vulture, black eagle, jackal buzzard and lanner falcon. If you don’t fancy a big hike up you can arrange for a vehicle to take you to and from the hide. Mountain biking is a great way to get stunning views of the Drakensburg as you traverse the network of tracks originally put in place for forestry purposes.

There is also a simple 14km bike trail in the Lotheni Valley in Drakensberg, stop at the historic Gelib Tree site and on a hot day take the opportunity to take a dip in one of the cool pools. Fishing is popular in Drakensburg, Kamberg nature reserve is one of the best for trout fishing but if river fishing is your thing you can head to Garden Castle, Giants Castle and Lotheni. Dam fishing can be found at Kamberg, Royal Natal and Highmoor. Highmoor is reserved primarily for still water trophy fishing.

The park contains a wide variety of birds, mammals and reptiles. Some of the larger mammals that can be spotted are mountain reedbuck, grey rhebuck, grey duiker, eland, klipspringer, bushbuck and oribi. The main predators that can be found are the leopard, black-backed jackal, caracal, serval, clawless and spotted neck otter as well as various types of mongoose and genet.  In the mountain park groups of chacma baboons, porcupines and colonies of rock hyrax can be found.
